I feel like I just made the lemonade, and got out the slip-n-slide. And with a hop, a skip and a jump, we’ve somehow fallen into fall. It’s sad. But then again, autumn is truly my favorite time of year, so that perks me up a bit as I go through the process of storing all the beach towels and swimsuits again. This week, I’m taking about some fall home decorating ideas, and I’m also taking part in a lovely little fall “blog hop”with a lovely blogging group. All week, you can head to these fantastic DIY blogs for all kinds of fall fun and fare! Today it’s “The Heathers” turn…myself, and my favorite “southern” Heather, of the FANTASTIC blog Southern State of Mind.
And since fall is truly my favorite, today I’m sharing with you some of the reasons why. Like Maria Von Trapp had her cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels, here are a few of my personal fall favorite things.

This give you a hint? And let me say this, as much as I love Wizard of Oz…to me, that’s a year-round fave. But in fall, my Peanuts obsession hits an annual stride. I can’t tell you how much joy bubbles up inside when I hear the Vince Guaraldi trio playing the Peanuts theme music and It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, or A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving is on the screen.
Truth be told, I’m a little obsessed with children’s books anyhow, but ESPECIALLY at Halloween time. We have an entire shelf devoted to Halloween reads. And my absolute favorite among these is We’re Off to Find the Witch’s House by Richard Krieb. Oh my gosh, I can’t tell you how gorgeous the sing-songy, almost lyrical words in this book just flow off your tongue. And the illustrations are fantastic. It’s divine. I buy a copy almost anytime a friend or family member is expecting a new baby. It’s just one of those books I feel like everyone needs in their collection.
I’m definitely A LOT biased this year in on this category. Because if you pick up the October/November 2015 issue of Cottages & Bungalows, you’ll see our home on 14 pages of it! We were over the moon with the beautiful spread and story that they did, and the images taken by the ever talented Marian Parsons AKA Miss Mustard Seed, and the styling done by Marian and Kriste of the blog Rosemary & Thyme. Soon, I’ll write a blog post about the shoot and experience. And regardless of my personal bias, I really do think that Cottages & Bungalows is one of the best home decor magazines on the market. They do such in depth stories, and the imagery/photography are world class, in my opinion. I don’t have a lot of subscriptions anymore, but C&B is one that I will always keep.
Favorite Fall Fun
Fall is my favorite time to just be at home. The foliage is gorgeous, and if we go anywhere, it’s local.
A local farm to pick apples.
Camping at a local state park.
Traipsing round the cornfields in our back yard.
Making friends with the locals.
Hitting up farm stands.
Playing in the hay…
Of course the leaves…
And can’t forget the pumpkin patch.
Favorite Fall Decorating Ideas
Can’t forget the decor! We are, afterall, a home decor and DIY blog.
And when it comes to fall decor, in our house, the kids rule the roost.
Whether it’s decorating for a party, or just for the season, we’re big on orange and black and halloween fare of all sorts.
It’s not the most relaxing to take in. But, in reality, our family is not so “relaxed” anyhow. We’re full of energy, and there’s definitely a lot of excited kids (and parents) here in the fall. So, I figure, why dampen it?
But, around Thanksgiving, we tone things down a tad.
And then, it’s all about veggies and using “natural” or at least natural-looking decor.
For now, I’m going to kick back and relax under my favorite fall blanket (actually, this is Hudson Bay striped vintage blankie is my favorite year-round) and look at all these pretty pictures of our pad and ponder about why my house can’t look that lovely all the time…or, ANY of the time. But I digress…
The rich colors of the fall season are just the best. Certainly some of my “favorite things”. Thanks for hopping over here today.
