How to hang a TV with a SANUS wall mount…
*This post is sponsored by SANUS; however, all thoughts and opinions are my own.*
This Father’s Day, in lieu of the typical gifts we give Dave around here….socks, a new shirt, a new tool or two…the kids and I thought it would be fun if we checked off a DIY that’s been on his personal to-do list for a while. One that always seems to get pushed to the bottom of the pile.

A TV mount. So we were happy to use the SANUS wall mount, which happens to be the #1 selling TV mount brand in the U.S.!
Dave had wanted to put the TV on the wall for years. All the cables, the height of the TV, all of that drove him crazy when he’d walk into our family room. I’d kind of learned just to ignore it, but Dave mentioned not liking the TV set up at least once a month, for the past five years.
So the reality was, taking on this DIY project for Father’s Day wasn’t just helping Dave, it was helping me, too. If I could avoid listening to that gripe…that was a great incentive as far as I was concerned to get this project done!
SANUS makes it very, very simple to choose the correct mount for your TV. They offer different versions from a fixed unit, to a full motion unit. Here’s a link to their guide that helps you pick the type that’s best for you. We decided to use the SANUS full motion unit, which tilts as well as swivels.
SANUS also offers fixed-position TV mounts, as well as TV mounts that only tilt. If you’re unsure of which you want to use, they walk you through the selection process on their website.
Here’s a link for their mountfinder. You just enter your TV’s brand, size and model number, and it spits out the specific SANUS wall mount unit you need. So simple and straightforward. The experience is like the exact opposite of shopping for printer ink.
You had that experience? When you walk into an office supply store with an entire row of printer ink, and you have to visually scan through every. single. cartridge. to find your flipping model number. That’s bad. Shopping for a SANUS wall mount? Good. Very good.
Want to know how to install a SANUS wall mount? They walk you through a more detailed, but super simple to follow instructions here. But I’m going to walk you through the process as well…in 3 basic steps…
How to install a SANUS wall mount for Father’s Day:
SANUS Wall Mount Installation:
1.) Attach TV bracket to back of TV.
Our TV was sitting on the little stand that came with it when we bought it. With my daughter’s help, we unscrewed the TV from the stand.
Once the TV was free of the stand, we measured the holes in the back of our TV. All TV’s have these screw holes on the back in order to accommodate wall mount hardware. The instruction book made it very easy to understand what we were supposed to do.
And having some intelligent assistants like this one was a bonus 😉
Based on the dimensions of those screw holes on the back of our TV, the SANUS wall mount guide showed which configuration of several possibilities we needed to use for our TV bracket.
Once the TV bracket arms were configured properly, we screwed it to the back of our TV. At this point, we were ready to move onto the 2nd step.
2.) Attach wall plate/wall bracket to wall.
Before pulling out the drill though, we had to decide how high we wanted our TV to be on the wall. SANUS has information to help you figure that part out in their installation guide.
The next step is to find a stud in the wall you’ll be mounting your bracket to. Dave and I have an age old disagreement about the best way to find a stud in a wall. I’m personally a fan of the more primitive “knock” method.
But if you’re a more precise person (who wants to avoid extra holes in your drywall), use a stud finder for this part.
Once you’ve marked the height desired and the location of your stud, SANUS makes it easy to mount the wall bracket, because they give you a template.
You tape the template on the wall, making sure it’s level. Then drill the holes as indicated on the template. They tell you the proper drill bit size and everything.
With the holes pre-drilled, it’s time to fasten your SANUS wall mount to the wall! All the proper hardware is included with the kit, so no need to dig through your garage to find screws, washers, etc.
The wall bracket weighs a couple of pounds, so it’s good to get an extra pair of hands to help steady the bracket as you are drilling the screws into the wall.
Ta-Da! The SANUS wall mount is installed!
3.) Time to hang the TV!
With the SANUS wall mount bracket in place, it’s time to put up the TV. The TV bracket on the back of your TV will now hook onto the SANUS wall mount. Again, it’s helpful to have an extra set of hands for this part as dropping your TV would mean a bad day.
Level the TV, then screw in the locking screw on the mount.
There’s even a handy little channel on the SANUS TV mount that you can use to neatly manage the TV cords and cables (seen below).
Speaking of cords and cables, you can either surface mount those in a paintable tunnel…this is the easiest way (and SANUS makes the tunnels if you want to go this route). The other option is to bury the cords in the wall, which is harder to do, but probably the best looking option overall. We chose to bury the cords behind the wall. Adds a bit of extra time to the project, but with some fish tape and a bit of persistence, anyone can tackle that job.
And with that, the SANUS TV mount is installed, and the TV is hanging securely on the wall. The TV can now swivel and tilt to accommodate watching from any spot in the room, or to cut down on glare at different times of day in our family room which has a lot of windows and doors.
The best part?
One item checked off of Dave’s to do list, in plenty of time for Father’s Day. And the kids all took part in this little DIY project which gave Dad a present that he has wanted for years.
