5 reasons to add VELUX skylights…
Natural lighting. A beautiful home’s best friend. It’s hard to have one without the other. Today, I’m going to discuss 5 awesome reasons to consider adding a Velux skylight.
Ever thought about adding skylights in your home? I sure have. For YEARS, I’ve been wanting to add a hefty dose of natural light to a couple of dark, dreary corners of our home. Did you know that you could do that? Add skylights to an existing space?
This past weekend we knocked out a wall between our family room and kitchen. Our kitchen is SO dark, which is the pits. But opening that wall made it a bit brighter in the kitchen, for sure.
We don’t have the budget to start a major kitchen renovation right now, but while I’m waiting for that ship to come in, I’d love to do a smaller scale renovation next door in our family room! That would brighten up BOTH spaces…two for one! Here’s what our family room looked like before we moved in:

See that big vaulted ceiling? Isn’t it just BEGGING for some skylights? We’ve already done some work in this space…added faux wood beams, whitewashed the fireplace, painted the walls and trim (which as you can see were pretty terrible before).
Now I’m thinking skylights and possibly a ceiling treatment would take this space to the next level! Here’s the mood board I worked up:
Isn’t that ceiling divine?! So bright and airy thanks to that planked treatment and the big, beautiful skylights!
Many people think that once a house is built, you either are lucky and got some skylights or you didn’t. And if you didn’t, well, then you’re just gonna be stuck living in the dark. Kind of like a car. You either buy the sports package with the sunroof and the leather seats, or you buy the basic package without the fun sunroof and settle for the cloth seats.
If that was what you thought, then I’m here to tell you, a whole naturally-lit world has just opened up for you, friend. YES, you can have skylights installed in your home anytime you so desire. You can even get skylights put into areas where you may think it’s just not possible, thanks to newer technologies like sun tunnels.
And there are some GREAT reasons to consider adding skylights to your home. Today, I’m sharing 5 of my favorites with you…
5 Great Reasons to Consider VELUX Skylights in your Home:
1.) Natural Light boosts mood.
Have you ever noticed that it’s easy to be in a good mood when you’re relaxing in a room that has a lot of natural light? I sure do. And I know I’m not the only one. Scientists have studied the effect that our exposure to sunlight has on mood many times over.
A Time magazine article entitled, “Why Sunlight Is So Good For You, “cites several studies, including one out of Australia which demonstrated that “people had higher serotonin levels on bright sunny days than on cloudy ones.” And as serotonin is the brain chemical which is believed to have direct effects on altering mood, such evidence is very compelling.
In my own home, I find I gravitate to the rooms where the natural light is the best. I avoid the basement like the plague because it just feels sad to me down there unless I turn every. single. light on.
2.) Homes with great natural light sell easiest.
For my real estate job, I see time and time again that homes with more natural light sell quicker than homes that show as “dark”. Investing in skylights can definitely increase property value when you’re adding natural light to spaces that would otherwise appear as unlit and gloomy to buyers.
3.) Skylights can help with air circulation.
VELUX skylights are fully operational. Some open/close manually. Others open and close with a remote control, and even include a moisture sensor that detects rain and closes the skylight for you when it starts to sprinkle. Being able to open a skylight is very helpful for air circulation.
Especially in spaces with high, vaulted ceilings where heat easily gets trapped.
By opening another window in a room with a skylight, you can create a great breeze in a space, and even avoid using the AC at certain times of the year depending on where you live.
4.) Skylights add a beautiful design element to a room.
It happens ALL. THE. TIME. And it’s such a missed opportunity. People forget about that fifth wall. AKA, your ceiling.
Adding interest to a ceiling can be one of the easiest and best design features in a room. Adding a skylight not only brings gorgeous natural light into a space, but it also draws the eye up when you’re in it.
That helps create a feeling of openness and space. It can make a room seem much larger, even when the footprint isn’t so grand. Wanting a fun pop of color? Velux skylight blinds shades are available in over 80 colors and patterns.
5.) Velux Skylights give full control over light entering a space.
Sometimes, people are hesitant to consider skylights because they fear losing control of the amount of light in a room. This is especially true in bedrooms, I think.
Velux skylights have optional integrated blinds and shades to allow the owner full control of their lighting situation. Time for bed? Close the shade. Mid-day matinee in the family room? Hit the button and down go the skylight blinds. It’s as simple as that.
When the shade or skylight blinds aren’t in use? They are hidden so that the view from your skylight is unhindered.
