How to make a DIY wall-mounted magazine rack from a $3 paint grid…
We renovated our kids’ bathroom for $1839. If you’ve ever embarked on a similar project, you may know that spending under 2k on a full bathroom remodel is a pretty small budget.
But although our budget was a bit tight, I don’t feel like we really had to sacrifice much of anything. We just needed to get a bit creative. And you can certainly do the same. A great place to start your quest for an amazing, creatively-infused bathroom on a budget? Accessories.
It’s completely possible to have necessary bathroom items like towel bars, a toilet paper holder, even a wall-mounted magazine rack…you just don’t need to buy them from the “bathroom” aisle at Bed, Bath & Beyond, or a department store.
For this little DIY project, a wall-mounted magazine rack, you’ll need to venture into the paint aisle. That’s where you can find these…
bucket grids AKA paint can grids
Traditionally used for rolling paint, I saw these wire paint can grids and thought “magazine rack”! And today, you’ll learn how to make your own.
First, watch this short video which will show you how it’s done.

Next, you’ll need a couple of supplies…
Supplies for DIY wall mounted magazine rack
- paint can grid (they come in various sizes ours is the 1-gallon version)
- sanding block or sand paper (I used 120-grit)
- drywall anchors
- screws
- drill driver
- hammer
How to make and install a wall mounted magazine rack
1. Drill holes into paint can grid.
Paint grids can be found in various sizes, from a 5-gallon variety on down to smaller several smaller sizes. For our wall-mounted magazine rack, we chose a 1-gallon grid.
After you’ve purchased the paint can grid, two holes will need to be drilled in order to allow the grid to be attached to your wall with screws.
2. Sand paint grid to knock off any sharp/rough areas.
These paint grids can be pretty rough and have sharp edges. Use a sanding block to sand down sharp edges throughout the grid. You certainly don’t want to cut yourself on a silly magazine rack, so better safe than sorry.
I used 150-grit sandpaper on my sanding block and gave the whole grid a good sanding
3. Install drywall anchors.
Once you’ve penciled on the wall where you want your rack to be placed, go ahead and put some drywall anchors up. You’ll first drill a couple of holes, then use a hammer to insert the anchors into the holes.
4. Screw paint grid to wall.
Go ahead and grab two screws and use your drill driver to attach the grid to the wall. You’re done!
All you need is your magazines. Or in our case, some books about potty training and underpants, and anything potty-related. We’re low-brow around here.
