These IKEA closet design ideas are inspiring, useful and totally gorgeous…
We all heavily rely on our closets to hold anything we need to store, yet we often overlook them when it comes to organizing our homes. With these unbelievably creative (and beautiful) Ikea closet design ideas to inspire you, look no further for your next Ikea closet hack!
Oh, closets. I love closet storage space – crave it, even – and yet, if I’m not careful, the closets in our house can turn into black holes where things go in and are never found again.
My son’s baseball glove? Oh man, we looked and looked for that thing and eventually just gave up and bought him a new one.
That awesome warm winter hat? Forget about it – it was long gone the second it crossed the threshold.
Seriously, it’s pointless for me to tell my kids to “put things away” when all that happens is the closets get filled up and no one can find anything they want or need.
Why are closets so difficult to make them work FOR us rather than feeling like we’re constantly working overtime to find anything inside a closet? (Trust me, like you, I’m super busy and don’t have the time – or, let’s be real, the desire – to put in extra work to find what’s needed.)
It all comes down to closet organization, my friends. Maybe that word “organization” makes the task seem overwhelming, even daunting.
The good news is that it doesn’t need to!
With just a little inspiration, some time and a small investment, you can turn your closets from black holes into useful spaces that help you stay organized so you find what you need…when you need it.

Incredible Ikea Closet Design Hacks
Given the closet organizing solutions that Ikea offers and considering how they may fit into the space you have, you may be thinking “how can I make my own closet organizer?” These hacks will show you exactly how to do that – and inspire you to tackle your own closet storage needs.
1. A Dream Dressing Room For A Fraction The Price
An unused room off our master bedroom became a deluxe dressing room. On a tight budget, IKEA was an incredibly affordable option. And to make it even MORE affordable, we bought IKEA Pax units…secondhand!
A few adjustments were used to create a built-in look, and voila! Fancy dressing room on a finite budget. Thanks, Ikea!
2. Perfect Storage Spot in Playrooms
We also utilized Pax closets in our basement playroom to make the most of an awkward hallway that had an odd bump-out area (look at the right side of the images below).
We reclaimed this area and now have a whole wall full of toy storage that thankfully slides behind closed doors, with a built-in look.
3. Pax System Custom Closet | Erin Kestenbaum
Create a one-of-a-kind, custom system that’s perfect for any style home by adding baseboards, shoe molding, crown molding, special hardware, recessed lights, and fun paint colors.
This Pax Ikea Hack not only looks truly custom but also high-end, and I love the way the wallpaper on the ceiling contrasts the system so perfectly.
4. Substitute Rast Units | Home Made By Carmona
When an Ikea closet system is too expensive, think outside the box to create a closet organizer from other Ikea pieces that works for you (and your budget).
This Ikea closet hack takes to Rast dresser units and some melamine board to create an affordable organizer’s dream setup.
5. Shelving, Shelving, Shelving | The Pink Dream
The versatility of the Pax system is its superpower. Depending on your space and how you need it to work for you, add drawers, shelves, and more to any level you wish.
This Pax closet organizer from Ikea uses a majority of shelves to create storage and display room for jewelry, mementos, books, and more. Plus, that swan wallpaper is just too cute!!
6. Indestructible for Kids’ Closets | The Handyman’s Daughter
Vineta, with her DIY genius, decided to utilize inexpensive, and pretty much indestructible IKEA Trofast bins to give her teen son’s small closet a makeover. Trofast bins are perfect for storing littles’ LEGO collections, and they also work great as drawers for clothing. A perfect combo in a kid’s space.
She’ll show you how to utilize a simple french cleat system to attach your own to your wall and customize the bins and drawers to fit best in your own space.
