People love using neutral paint shades in their homes for a variety of reasons. Although neutrals are extremely popular, there are some beautiful non-neutral colors that are worth considering when you want to add a pop of color to your home.
I’ve received a lot of comments and questions from readers regarding choosing paint colors. Knowing how challenging it can be to choose the perfect color for your home, I was inspired to share in-depth color reviews of many popular paint shades. My hope is that these paint guides will give all the details that you need to help you choose your perfect color scheme!
I’ve already covered many neutrals in the white, off-white, beige, and greige categories, and now I’m branching out into some popular colors. If you want a room to feel more alive, add some color to your home. That’s what I do, anyways!
When I want to add some color, I typically lean toward blues because they are soothing and centering – the perfect shade after a tough day. (Have you seen my blue bedroom?) But a color that I love even more than a lovely blue is a tranquil blue-gray. Sherwin Williams Krypton (SW 6247) is a cool, calming blue shade of paint with gray undertones that help it act as a neutral.
If you’re searching for a light, neutral-leaning blue, check out all the info about Sherwin Williams Krypton that I’m sharing below.

Sherwin Williams Krypton Undertones
Undertones are an inescapable part of paint colors because they help create the colors we see. It doesn’t do any good to bury your head in the sand and ignore them—and trust me, I’ve tried! Instead, learn about them so you can use them in a favorable way (or at least choose a different color if you don’t want certain undertones).
Please (please, please, pleeeeease!) use paint swatches for every color you seriously consider. You’ll get the most benefit from them if you move them around the room and look at them at different points throughout the day. Checking them in different lighting will give you the answers you need about how the color will look in YOUR home.
Let’s chat about SW Krypton’s undertones. Krypton is considered a blue paint, but it has strong gray undertones which soften and make it more neutral, creating a lovely shade that’s both soothing and airy.

How Different Types of Lighting Affect SW Krypton
Lighting affects the appearance of any and all paint colors. Here’s a general idea of how lighting will impact Krypton’s appearance.
- North-facing light – cool northern light brings out the coolness in any color. Krypton will look less blue as its gray undertones come forward.
- South-facing light – bright and warm southern lighting will neutralize the coolness of this hue.
- East-facing light – yellow morning light will tone down the color’s coolness in the morning, but then it will make a comeback in the afternoon when the light is to the west.
- West-facing light – this ultra-warm afternoon light will neutralize Krypton’s cool tones.
Great Coordinating Colors for Krypton
Thanks to the heavy infusion of gray, Krypton tends to play well with other colors. It looks great with white, neutrals, black, and even warm brass and wood tones.

LRV of Sherwin Williams Krypton (SW 7010)
Just looking at paint is too subjective for a good evaluation, so we need to look at some basic information to add an objective means of evaluation.
Light Reflectance Value (LRV) is a number between 0 and 100 that’s assigned to each paint shade based on the amount of light that hue reflects. A lower number means the color reflects less light and a higher number means it reflects more light.
The LRV of SW Krypton = 52
Krypton sits in the medium range. It has plenty of saturation to contrast well with white trim but is also light enough that very bright light will wash it out.

Bedrooms Painted in SW Krypton
In general for bedrooms, and low-traffic areas, flat paint is fine. If you like something with a bit of shine (and more ease of cleaning) opt for eggshell or satin.
1. Calming Blue Gray Paint
I mentioned that Krypton is the perfect coastal blue, right? The soothing blue-gray combination instantly transports me to the beach and makes me think of ocean waves. I love that tranquil vibe in bedrooms like this space from Medicine and Manicures!
2. A Shabby Chic Feel
The bright cool light in this room by August Fields makes the paint read more gray than blue. You can see the transition of the color saturation as you move away from the window.
3. Beachy Blue Undertone
In contrast to the first bedroom I listed, the walls in Heather Krout‘s daughter’s bedroom give you an idea of how gray you’ll ever see Krypton. There’s definitely still blue, but it’s muted compared to the bedroom above.
4. Calm Bedroom Retreat in Blue
Blue color palettes are very popular for bedrooms, and it’s no wonder why. A good blue paint color can have a very calming, peaceful effect when used correctly on interior walls.
This lovely bedroom uses several shades of blue, like the navy on the bedside table, and the blue-green in the linens to compliment the wall color and create a color scheme that mirrors lots of pretty colors found in nature.
