My Christmas Tree Style: Pink Marshmallow Wonderland

A confession and a pretty, pink Christmas tree. That’s what I have for you today. Let’s start with the tree, k?

Yes, it’s pink. It’s the most fabulously perfect pink Christmas tree ever if I do say so. When I was a kid, colorful Christmas trees were having a moment. At least I think they were.

I didn’t know much of trends and such in the 70s as I was so small, but I did know we had a marvelous, stark white Christmas tree back then.

It stood right in the middle of two windows that faced the street in front of our house…think leg lamp in A Christmas Story. Yep. Right there.

I have vivid memories of decorating that tree every year with my mom and my great-grandma Ruth. We didn’t do a theme or worry about such things back then.

One at a time, we’d reach into a shoebox and unveil the ornaments from their humble paper towel wrappings.

It was a glorious mix-matched smorgasbord of decorations. Many made by myself and my brother in school and given annually to our parents as their “big” Christmas gifts.

 

So I came up with my own “flocking” method to give a tree the most gorgeous pillowy, soft, snowy look without the mess.

But the gist of that technique is one secret ingredient, which is boas. Feather boas. The first year I tried this technique, I used all white boas on her little white tree.

But last year, I tried pink ones.

And I fell in love with that look even more. It was then that I first typed, “pink Christmas tree” into that google bar just to see what was out there.

And when the results streamed in 0.1267 seconds later, the angel choir began to sing, the heavens opened up and stars shone brightly on my computer screen and I knew that I had found a small little pink miracle. Pin

 

Obviously a crazy misinterpretation of a simple google search and a tad on the overly dramatic side, but it’s my story and I can embellish as I see fit. Point is, I was in love with this pink tree.

A pink tree for my daughter’s room. But really, it was for me.

And there you have it. I said it out loud. Or on a computer screen for anyone who has been suckered into scrolling down this far into my walk down Christmas tree memory lane.

It went out of stock quickly last fall, so I couldn’t buy one.

But one day this August, since that’s when we know ALL things Christmas are re-stocked in this crazy, mixed-up world of ours, the pink tree came back online. I knew because I had signed up for email alerts. Pin

 

So I pounced. I pounced and then played it off as a gift for my daughter’s birthday in August so that Tib wouldn’t be mad.

She was happy because she got a big box to open. When she saw what it was, truthfully, she wasn’t enamored. I, however, grinned ear to ear.

Looking back, it probably looked a bit like a grinchy grin as what I had done was a wee bit dastardly.

When I finally got to set up the new tree in her room this year, I was just as in love with it as I knew I would be. Charlotte, on the other hand? Let’s just say she’s coming around.

 

And I hope she does come around. I hope that she keeps this auspicious, tending toward gaudy Christmas tree for many years, if not decades to come.

I hope she puts it up in her college apartment and bores her roommates with stories of play clay ornaments she made when she was four, and the peanut nativity ornament she made when she was eight.

I hope she puts it up in her first house. And when she takes it out of the box, I hope memories of childhood come flooding back to her just as they did me each year when that white tree came out of packing.

 

Maybe someday, she can even decorate it her own little one’s room. Fantasies of a hopeless romantic? Rantings of a silly idealist? Definitely.

But I don’t care. Because it’s Christmas. And anything good, wonderful and magical can happen at Christmas.

Even having a perfectly pink, marshmallowy winter wonderland tree of your very own. Or your daughter’s. Either way, it’s pretty awesome.
