Have a train lover at home? So do we. Check out this all things train room for ideas for your own little train aficionado…
This is the story of a boy’s DIY train room that is all things planes, trains, and automobiles…ok, trains, planes, and MORE trains.
Our 7-year-old is not into sports. No superheroes here. He is into vehicles, and especially trains. BIG TIME. So, when we moved into our house out here in the country, we knew that trains had to join us.

Here is how his bedroom looked when we bought the house:
May have been great for a teenage girl, but was not our 7-year-old boy’s cup of apple juice.
So, we hatched a plan for his train room…and it started with this:
A custom wall mural from Etsy, with a sepia vintage steam locomotive! It went up like a giant sticker…kind of like wallpaper without the mess of wallpaper adhesive. It is a typical vinyl wall decal, just much LARGER than most.
We painted the walls with a faux “linen” technique. Close up, it looks like wallpaper.
We added a bunch of neutral/brown textures and patterns with linens, like the wool herringbone curtains and DIY cornice board, the houndstooth rug, and pillows with argyle and a Burberry-esque plaid.
We put up an antique bronze sconce above his bed. And simple cubbies with fabric and wicker baskets. I’m not *in love* with them, but they are definitely functional.
One of my favorite elements in his train room is the antique Hudson blanket on his bed (here’s a link for a NEW Hudson blanket, if you’re interested). Ours was purchased from Ebay.
And a newer edition, two nightstands with dark stain and caning. They’re sophisticated but still fun.
A little table/play area with some dangling planes for “ambiance”…
Lots of shelving room for all our train books!! These were sold at PBKids, once upon a time.
And a little monogrammed burlap pillow in a comfy faux leather chair rounds out the space for our little train aficionado.
All in all, that’s now our little conductor’s space. No longer “Plain Jane”, now we’re all “Plane Train” up in here…and he loves it.

This turned out AMAZING. Very tasteful! Love the Hudson's Bay blanket on the bed. We have a bunch of vintage blankets in the family and can't wait to bust them out on my kids beds when they are older and able to appreciate them.

That train! What a room makeover and it should last him quite a while too.
