Easy DIY bolster pillows…
I love useless throw pillows.
And, yup, I am aware that they are, in fact, useless. If John Gray did not write a chapter, or several, in his Men are from Mars books about this odd affinity women have with pillows, he definitely missed the boat.
I certainly can appreciate that this “thing” we feminine types have for fluffy adornment of all shapes and sizes in our bedrooms could be the source of bewilderment for our masculine counterparts.
I heart throw pillows – most especially bolster pillows.
Personally, I even have a favorite version amongst this genre of uselessness. The bolster.
Those long, squatty forms that are so helpful in giving the bed, or little settee, perhaps, an interesting accent that adds dimension, texture, maybe some pattern or a lovely pop of color…
Are you sensing my deep-seated feelings of fondness here?
Now, I could tell you that my love of bolster pillows springs from a very practical, useful place. You see, I’m a physical therapist by training. And we PT’s LOVE bolster pillows, or termed professionally “lumbar rolls“.
These little beauties can, in fact, be very helpful ergonomically in our offices and our cars. A lovely assistance for many of us out there suffering with low back pain.
They can also be used for all kinds of very beneficial stretches and exercises. Now, keep in mind, I no longer treat patients, and as such, you should NOT start using a bolster pillow here and there because some silly blogger who loves throw pillows told you to do it.
In fact, quite the opposite, really. My point here is to say that EVEN THOUGH this is one pillow that really could and does have some practical value…it would be a downright lie to tell you that’s the reason for my attraction. I love it solely for it’s pointlessness.
Did you see the movie Along Came Polly? You know, with Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston…there’s a great scene in that movie about throw pillows…
I’m gonna rest my case. Bolster pillows, and throw pillows in general, ARE IN FACT, POINTLESS. BUT, if you are one of the millions of throw-pillow-loving-women (or men) out there let us NOT hang out heads in shame. Let us praise the pretty patterns they bring into our lives!
Let us cherish those warm, inviting colors they cheer us with. I say we give thanks for the transforming and tantalizing textures and the dramatic dimension they add to our homes! I think I feel a cheer comin’ on…
LONG LIVE THE THROW PILLOW!
Know what else is so great about throw pillows? They aren’t hard to make. I think I learned to sew a simple envelop DIY pillow cover first, then bolsters were the next thing I taught myself. (Below is a bolster in our foyer, on our DIY burlap settee).
I used this DIY pillow cover tutorial by Martha Stewart. I love the way this specific DIY pillow cover looks with the cinched ribbons on the end. (Below is a bolster made for our son’s train/transportation bedroom).
There are also PLENTY of no-sew bolster DIY pillow tutorials out there as well! Here’s a great one from one of my favorite home decor blogs, Miss Mustard Seed. Her three-minute, no-sew bolster DIY pillow cover.
Or you can try a gorgeous no-sew DIY pillow cover by the wonderful Kari Anne at Thistlewood Farms.
No matter how you make ’em, or even buy ’em, I just think DIY pillows/DIY pillow covers can add some serious pizzaz, without breaking the bank. And pizzaz is always a good thing!
We got DIY pillow covers of some sort or another in almost every room in the house. (Above and below in our guest room).
We’re definitely rockin’ and “ROLLin”…tee hee.
Sometimes, I’ll even make some quickie, non-commitment, no-sew DIY pillow covers varieties out of extra fabric, or scarves I have lying around to bring in some seasonal changes to our decor.
While they may be pointless, they sure are pretty. And heck, there’s lots of things in life we don’t really need….chocolate, footed pajamas, buttered popcorn…but isn’t life just a little better WITH them?

I beg to differ…I NEED buttered popcorn.
I love your bolsters, though. I bought a bolster pillow from Marriott after staying there a couple years ago. It's my official "snuggle" pillow at night. And it's in an ugly, regular, doesn't-fit-right pillow case. I definitely need to try one of these ideas!
