Our DIY painted stairs have been one of the most popular DIY projects we’ve ever written about.

And I LOVE that it’s a project that resonated with you guys so much. Because it’s one of those projects that isn’t that hard, and it’s SO inexpensive! We published the painted stairs tutorial over 2 years ago, back in February 2016.
Ever since, I have regularly received emails and questions about how the stairs have held up. So I wanted to give you an update on them today.
To be honest, I kind of thought initially that the painted stairs would be a bit of a bandaid. I figured we’d slap some paint on them, and eventually, when our budget was a little beefier, we’d overhaul the staircase completely.
BUT, now that I’ve lived with the painted stairs for 2+ years,
I definitely no longer see this as simply a temporary thing. These stairs have held up SO well. I’m honestly SHOCKED at how insanely similar they look today as compared to the day we finished painting them.
Sure, there are a few scuffs on there, and a couple little dings. But that is about it. And that would be true of ANY type of flooring.
These stairs are very inexpensive pine stairs that led to an unfinished basement once upon a time.
The staircase was built for function, definitely not form. And the pine is soft wood, so dings are not surprising. But it’s NOT paint chipping off. AT ALL. Still not convinced they could have possibly held up this well? I made a video for you. With CLOSE-UPS of the painted stairs…
Hope that this painted stairs update will give you a little clarity as to whether you want to try this project in your own home! If you’re ready to give it a go –>> head HERE for the full tutorial, OR, pin this post for later:
