Ready to get your Ikea fix on? Check out these imaginative Ikea Lack table and shelf hacks to inspire you to change up your basic Ikea furniture.
Today, I am continuing my series on different hacks you can do with Ikea products. Recently, I showed you ideas for hacking Kallax units, Hemnes pieces, and even desks! You’ll love these Ikea Lack table hack ideas (and some Ikea Lack shelf ideas) just as much – I promise.
Ikea furniture’s affordable pricing and simplistic styling elements make their pieces PERFECT for any budget and any person.
But as much as we love that simple Ikea style, it can also have a downside. It can be a tad…dare I say, boring? Or else it may feel like you have the exact same table as all your friends. Well, maybe you do, but you don’t have to FEEL like you do!

If you’re already an IKEA die-hard (or even if you haven’t yet caught the bug), then grab this free list of 25 IKEA must-have items for a stylish home on a budget! These are my favorite IKEA products as many of them can be used in amazing, outside-the-box ways, too.
The way to combat that is to “hack” your Ikea furniture. Personalize your pieces by changing them. You can paint, add trim, add wood features, combine pieces into a larger single piece, add decals and more to make your own Ikea furniture look custom and unique.
If you haven’t checked out Ikea products before, you are seriously missing out and need to go see what the rest of the world already knows.
Here’s my first Ikea hack of the day: While you’re there, try their cinnamon rolls. They’re life-changing!
Today, I am going to show you some truly amazing and inspiring hack ideas for Ikea Lack furniture.
Warning: These hack examples may cause you to throw caution to the wind and start customizing your own Lack pieces right away.

Ikea Lack Table Hack Ideas
How do you decorate an Ikea Lack table? Well, let me show you, my friends.
Due to its VERY affordable price point, the Ikea Lack table is a super popular piece of furniture to hack. Because if you make a mistake…who cares? When you only spend $10 on the table, messing it up isn’t the end of the world (and that’s coming from someone who’s extremely frugal).
How do you say “let me upgrade you” in Swedish? Well, I promise I don’t know, but these hackers might have an idea or two.
1. Chic Farmhouse | Shelterness
A good farmhouse hack always makes me weak in the knees. This two-tone look with the white base and wood top is classy and a definite upgrade from the standard Lack table. I love how that starburst wood pattern creates a unique look that you don’t find on many pieces of even more expensive furniture.
2. Black & White Kid’s Table | Comfy Dwelling
Every kid needs a kid-sized table in their room for art and creativity projects, right? The Ikea Lack table is the perfect size to pair with a kid-sized chair. Use paint and decals to make the table fit with your child’s room theme.
I’m thinking this would look pretty perfect in any animal-themed room!
3. Wood Tile Accent Shelf | Kaleidoscope Living
Oh so clever! Dress up the interior of your Lack with some wood accent tile! It gives this modern looking table a bit more of a rustic look.
4. Nailhead Trim | OFriendly
Love that industrial vibe? Combine two tables to create a solid top and solid base. Paint both pieces, glue them together and add nailhead trim strips along all the edges to create a seamless look!
And make sure you grab this list of 25 awesome IKEA products to help you create a stylish home on a budget!
5. DIY Cube Endtable | DIY Candy
Doesn’t this hack look complicated? Adding sliding doors is easier than it seems, I promise. Combine two Lack square tables together, add custom legs to the bottom of the unit, and use dry erase boards (it’s true!) to create the doors.
6. Verticle Garden Planter | Craftberry Bush
Never have I ever thought about only using the frame of a Lack table and making it vertical to hold plants! Well, my mind is blown, friends. Plus, with a hack like this one you get to see the inner workings of the table.
7. Penny-Topped Side Table | Ikeahackers
This stately-looking hack shines in more ways than one. I love copper against the black as the contrast really makes the whole piece pop.
No mistaken identity for an Ikea table here!
8. Add Shapes | Curbly
Add wood veneer shapes to a solid color-painted table. This easy and clever hack enables you to make a very unique table. I love the ideas of the shapes coming down off the sides of the table so they add more interest than simply being only on top.
9. Lego Activity & Storage Table | Handyman’s Daughter
I’ve seen a lot of Lego activity table ideas in my day, being a mom of three. But this one is definitely one of my all time favorites. Not only is it affordable, but the storage slider tray is genius, and the Lack table is a perfect size (and price) for this use!
10. Cat Tree Hack | Ikeahackers
Do you know how expensive cat trees are? Engineer your own for a fraction of the cost. Four Lack tables, some brackets, and screws, and some Sisal twine are all that stand between you and your quick and easy cat tree.
11. Sofa Table Transformation | Kaleidoscope Living
Most of these hacks turn square Lack tables into things of beauty. This hack transforms a basic lack table into a high-end looking sofa table perfect for any décor.
I can’t get over those wood mosaic tiles!
12. Cube Conversion | DIY Candy
Combine two Lack tables together to create a coffee table with storage. I’m obsessed with the wood paneling on this hack!
13. Side Table Ottoman Hack | East Coast Creative Blog
The Lack table is a perfect size, albeit a little tall, to create an ottoman. Cut few inches off the legs to shorten the table and add a cushion top for comfort as you rest your legs.
14. Side Table with Magazine Rack | Blue i Style
How about this creative idea? Glam up the Lack top, and add a fabric magazine sling underneath!
15. Wood Topped Coffee Table | Treasures and Travels Blog
I’m just not sure I’ll ever get tired of the rustic look! I love this simple hack for this DIY coffee table.
16. Ottoman Hack | Turned to Design
Here’s another ottoman example! Classy, cheap, and easy to accomplish- it hits all my checkmarks.
Does it really get any better than that?
17. Dog Diner | Ikeahackers
How many times have I stepped on the dog’s food bowl and spilled food everywhere? (more than I’d like to admit)
Elevate the dog dishes to their level to make eating easier on them and keep those dishes off the floor. This works great for cats too (just make the holes smaller)!
18. Bottlecap Tabletop | My So Called Crafty Life
I say put those bottlecaps to use and create a colorful, fun statement piece for anywhere – but especially the man cave!
19. Gilded Bedside Table | Style Me Pretty
How adorable! The beautiful hack looks elegant and pricey, thanks to the gold leaf, but it’s really not. I want this in my room!

20. Mid-Century Modern Coffee Table | Triple Max Tons
Grab some tapered legs off of Etsy or eBay, then cut off the top and attach the legs to just the tabletop to give this stock table a new – old – look (on the cheap, I might add).
21. Grundtal Kid’s Kitchen | Ikeahackers
This kitchen island on wheels idea spares no attention to detail in an effort to make playing kitchen a social activity for kids. Every time I look at it, I see some new detail I missed before!
22. Upholstered Ottoman | Amusing MJ
Cut off the legs of your Ikea Lack table and add a foam cushion, some batting, and some fabric to create a tufted ottoman rivaling something you could purchase from West Elm!
23. Marble Table | Sketch 42 Blog
Using Modge Podge and marbled paper to cover a Lack table is very clever, indeed. This one simple-to-do hack completely changes the look and feel of the table!
24. String Art Table | Mark Montano
I cannot even say how much I love this hack. The creativity just blows me away, and I’m totally a sucker for going colorful (in the right way). Note: if you have a cat or young children, this hack may not last very long!
25. Table Lights | Instructables
Now this one is fun! Take the top off your table, add Christmas lights to the inside of your table then turn off the big lights and let the string lights shine.
26. Rolling Side Table | Instructables
No wasted parts with this hack. Connect two Lack tables to each other and use the remaining legs on the sides opposite from each other. Then, add castors for a rolling side table that looks simple but definitely not Ikea-simple.
27. Paint Chip Dog Bed | Jonathan Fung Style
Unique for sure! This clever idea uses Pantone paint chips decoupaged onto the table (which is turned upsidedown). Add a decoupaged canopy to the top for a sensational colorful dog bed Ikea hack.
Ikea Lack Shelf Hacks
While the majority of this post is focused on Lack table hacks (there are so many cool ideas out there!), I did want to show you a few inventive shelf hacks too.
Check these out:
28. Home Bar | Shelterness
Install Ikea Lack shelf units and add lights underneath them. Then, top the shelves with your glasses, decanters and more. These floating shelves make a great small-space bar area and look gorgeous too!
29. Ombre Shelves | Domino
I’m totally a sucker for a good ombre paint job like this one! Pick whatever color you like (or fits your décor) and go wild.
30. Kitchen Shelves | Digs Digs
With this hack, the shelves blend into the wall and let the stars shine – that is, the items on top of the shelves.
31. Floating Office Shelves | Amazing Interior Design
There’s just something mysterious and wonderfully appealing about floating shelves. Use floating shelves like this in any room in your house to stay organized and add a little pizzaz to your style.
I hope these Ikea Lack table hacks and Ikea Lack shelf hacks have inspired you to push up your sleeves and get creative with your own Lack – or go buy one to hack if you don’t have one yet (is not having one yet even possible?)!
