A Fun Repurposed Pumpkin Craft From Used Socks…

Two things happened. One. My kids wanted to try a new pumpkin craft this fall.

Two. I had a bin full of used socks that were headed for a life of dusting furniture. But a couple of the cuter ones were lucky and got upcycled. Here’s how…

Once again, my crafting laziness has come in handy. I’m always trying to outdo myself with making the easiest. project. ever. Well, this one is pretty darn easy.

It will take you no more than 5-minutes. It’s a great little fall craft to do with the kids! No needles, no sewing. Check out the quick video tutorial:

Steps to make your little sock craft fall pumpkins 🎃:

1. Stuff sock with poly-fil.

Choosing the right sock may be the trickiest thing about this pumpkin craft (which should tell you how simple this will be)!

A baby sock will probably not work very well (too small). Adult ankle socks also will not work too well (too short). Choose a mid-calf length sock, or knee high. Those without prominent heel stitching work better.

And colorful socks are more fun than old, grimy socks that were once white, but now appear to be more of a 1980’s version of white…like “buff” “nude” or “almond” 😬.

Shove enough Poly-fil into the bottom of the sock until it feels pumpkin-y. It should be puffy, and fairly rotund ;).

2. Tie off end with rubber band.

Now simply tie off the open end of the sock with a rubber band.

3. Flip excess sock material back over your pumpkin.

You need to eliminate the remainder of your sock material. An easy way to do this is to simply flip it back over the pumpkin.

Once you’ve flipped the sock back over the pumpkin once, if you still have more excess sock, tie off the end again with another rubber band.

Then flip the remaining material back over the top again. Simply continue this process until you’ve eliminated all the excess sock material.

If you have a little excess at one end, you can hot glue it to form a nice, smooth bottom side. Or, you can just leave it alone. The excess fabric may help your pumpkin stand a little better. Your choice.

4. Attach stem to your sock pumpkin craft.

I like to use a real pumpkin stem (I just break it off one of the little real pumpkins I buy each fall season) for my fabric pumpkin projects.

You could also use a stick, or a little roll of fabric, etc. Whatever you decide on, all that needs to happen now is hot gluing the stem in place atop your pumpkin.

And with a stem now attached to your pumpkin craft, you’re all done!
