Here’s a list of the top gray-green paint colors to help you choose the perfect touch of nature to restore balance, harmony and tranquility in your home!
Remember the 1960s, 70s, and 80s when homes were refreshingly and stylishly colorful?
Although neutrals have been the mainstay in interior design for decades, I’m over the moon that there’s a shift happening right now. We’re moving (at a snail’s pace) away from neutrals and beginning to embrace color again.
Neutral paint colors have been the ones that interior designers (and homeowners) have turned to for many years. I love gray, beige, and greige colors as much as the next gal because they’re as versatile and visually impactful as you want them to be.
But a gal can take only SO much “neutral!”
So yes, I’m thrilled about a recent trend that embraces more color. Feel unsure about it? If you still want to dip your toe in, one safe way to embrace color is to add a little to your neutrals.
And I’ve got the perfect candidate for it: I’d like to introduce you to gray-green paint colors.
They’re lovely and rejuvenating, and you can find them in any depth you want, from light to dark. There are gray-green shades with varying levels of green to give your space a pop of color as subtle or as rich as you crave.
I say bring it on!

Gray Green Paint Colors FAQs
Knowing color psychology helps us understand the impact of certain color families on our mood and decor. Green symbolizes nature and harmony. Adding green to gray symbolizes experience, wisdom, and balance.
This family color is coming in hot! Not so long ago in 2022, most of the major paint brands chose some shade of green paint as their color of the year.
Sherwin Williams selected Evergreen Fog as its top pick in 2022, while Benjamin Moore picked October Mist. And while these beautiful gray green paint colors may also be considered a trendy color at the moment, they are truly very versatile, and I believe will stand the test of time, as well.
Gray-green is the perfect neutral to freshen up any space! Consider using it for:
– Family rooms
– Kitchens
– Cabinets
– Vanities
– Stairways
– Bathrooms
– Bedrooms
– Mudrooms
– Basements
– Home offices
– Accent walls
– Exteriors
And it’s an ideal hue for contemporary, modern farmhouse, boho, traditional, transitional, French country, and modern-style homes.

Gray-Green Paint Undertones
When talking about undertones, it’s necessary to know the design terminology. The primary paint color that you see (purple, green, etc.) is called the overtone. And all those small nuances you notice that help you differentiate one hue from another are the undertones.
Gray-green colors can have yellow, blue, or brown undertones.
Different types of lighting will influence the way green-gray paint looks, so get large paint swatches to thoroughly vet any colors you like before buying them. Peel and stick paint swatches allow you to take those undertones out for a test drive before you cover your walls in a shade you could hate!

Gray Green Paint Colors Lighting Considerations
I know it’s a little vague to say that lighting can significantly impact how paint shades appear, so let’s add some color (ha!) by clarifying how various types of natural lighting can make green-gray paint colors read.
- North-facing rooms – this cool, shadowy lighting makes most colors look darker and cooler. Gray greens will often appear more muted (less green) and deeper.
- South-facing rooms – this consistent, warm-all-day lighting makes colors look lighter and softer. You may hear designers say that southern lighting makes shades look their best.
- West-facing rooms – these rooms have shifting lighting exposure, displaying dim light in the morning before transitioning to warm light exposure in the late afternoon and early evening. Most shades lean into their cool undertones in the morning and then into their warmer undertones later in the day.
- East-facing rooms – these rooms have a similar experience (but in the opposite order) from western-facing rooms.
More Colors to Consider
Although green-gray paint is gorgeous (and still neutral!), it may be different from what you want in your home.
Perhaps gray-blue paint can lend your space the color you crave, or greige paint (with a green undertone?) could be what you want!
If you aren’t ready to push the button and move forward with green-gray paint colors, check out some of these other popular shades we’ve explored!

- Silver Strand (Sherwin Williams) – a light gray with blue and green undertones.

- Gray Owl (Benjamin Moore) – one of the brand’s most popular gray colors.

1. Sherwin Williams Sea Salt
Ah, Sea Salt (SW 6204). This light gray-green has an LRV of 63 and some blue undertones that can make their presence known occasionally.
Most of the time, Sea Salt just looks beautiful with a subtle pop of green, as you can see here from A Design Story.
2. Sherwin Williams Pewter Green
Pewter Green (SW 6208) is bold. Its LRV of 12 adds a dark and daring vibe to a room. Use it with wood tones for a down-to-earth look that will draw people in.
Or take a note from Average Inspired and take advantage of its effortless elegance as an exterior color.
3. Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog
Evergreen Fog (SW 9130) is light enough (LRV 30) to work nearly anywhere. If you just can’t decide between gray-green, blue-gray, or blue-green, eliminate the guesswork with Evergreen Fog.
This lovely gray-green paint color’s seductive chameleon quality pulls you in and makes you not want to leave.
Would you ever want to leave this bedroom from Blesser House?
4. Sherwin Williams Retreat
Retreat (SW 6207) is a go-to choice when you want something that’s not too light or too dark.
With its LRV of 21, this muted green will make your space feel fresh and gorgeous and has enough saturation that it won’t ever wash out in natural light.
Retreat is the perfect color on these entryway built-ins from Angela Marie Made. Indeed, it’s a darker shade that’s acting like a very neutral paint color in this bright and beautiful space, giving it almost a spa-like feel.
5. Benjamin Moore Oil Cloth
Is Oil Cloth (CSP-760) gray or green? Yes! This stunning hue is one of the most balanced gray-green paint colors and has a light reflective value of 35.31.
Use it as a sophisticated but unobtrusive neutral backdrop for your family room decor like House by the Bay Design did.
Or this sage paint color could be a great choice in other spaces in your home, too. I think it could be a great bedroom accent wall color, personally.
6. Sherwin Williams Oyster Bay
Oyster Bay (SW 6206) is a medium green gray paint color (LRV 44) that creates a perfect moody coastal vibe.
This shade has blue undertones that give it a shifty quality that you should vet with paint swatches before committing. Otherwise, you may have a blue-gray instead of a gray-green in your home!
Either way though, it’s hard to complain when you see results as stunning as in this laundry room from Chris Loves Julia…Oyster Bay is looking like a great option…period.
7. Benjamin Moore October Mist
October Mist (1495) was named Benjamin Moore’s color of the year in 2022. It’s another medium gray-green (LRV 46.54), but instead of blue undertones, you’ll find yellow ones.
It’s an uplifting shade reminiscent of springtime greenery that pokes up through the old dead growth of the previous growing season.
Isn’t this mudroom from Angela Marie Made gorgeous?
8. Behr’s Nature’s Gift
Do you love the gray-green paint colors that have yellow undertones too? Here’s another one.
Nature’s Gift (N4140-4) is slightly darker than October Mist (LRV 35) and appears somewhat more olive – albeit a MUTED olive.
I love how Charleston Crafted paired this Behr paint with a creamy off-white to embrace its warm tones!
9. Sherwin Williams Livable Green
Livable Green (SW 6176) is one of the lightest shades on this list, with an LRV 61. It has plenty of saturation to hold its own, even in bright lighting.
And it’s an inviting shade with subtle yellow undertones to make it feel neutral and balanced, like this example from The DIY Nuts.
10. Sherwin Williams Comfort Gray
Comfort Gray’s (SW 6205) name tells you everything you REALLY need to know about this shade.
It’s one of my favorite gray-green paint colors because it’s a top choice for peaceful spaces like bedrooms. And its LRV of 54 means that it hits that depth sweet spot where it’s never too bright or too dark.
I could totally curl up in this bed from I Can Teach My Child and read a book!
11. Sherwin Williams Rainwashed
Although Rainwashed (SW 6211) is a light shade (LRV 59) with a good mix of green, gray, and blue, Sherwin Williams places it in the green family.
And after seeing this space from Woodshop Diaries, the green family seems an obvious place for this color to be categorized within.
However, be aware of its chameleon qualities because those blue undertones can sometimes make it appear more blue.
Either way, this is one of my favorite green paint colors…or favorite blue-green blends, if you will. And this shade is usually a really good idea in a bathroom where people are often on the hunt for that resort…spa vibe.
Be aware that when the natural light is low, it can make this color look more blue. Conversely, with artificial lighting (especially warm lightbulbs), or in a south-facing room, this color leans into its green zone.
12. Benjamin Moore Storm Cloud Gray
Storm Cloud Gray (2140-40) is one of the shades people describe quite differently. True to its name, this medium-to-dark shade (LRV 28.88) often looks very stormy and moody.
However, given the right room and decor, I think that “elegant” and “dusty green” fit better, as you can see in this room from Sincerely, Sara D.
Check out how this paint looks more like a gray hue up in that shady corner, while in the rest of the space where its brighter, we see more of the earth tone, grayish green come into play.
13. Sherwin Williams Rosemary
As one of the darker gray-green paint colors on this list, Rosemary (SW 6187) has a lower LRV of 14 and lends a fresh, organic ambiance to a room.
Its gray undertones make it more versatile while keeping a dramatic quality you cannot help but notice when you walk into a room.
Pair it with white trim like Vintage Revivals did for a crisp and elegant color combination!
14. Behr Riverdale
Riverdale (N410-3) is that ideal light gray-green paint color (LRV 55) for spa (aaaaah!) vibes.
Follow Charleston Crafted’s example and turn your bathroom into a soothing and refreshing space where you just want to relax in the tub with a book and your favorite glass of bubbly after a hard day.
15. Sherwin Williams Escape Gray
Gray-green or green-gray? Escape Gray (SW 6185) is probably best described as a medium (LRV 41) hazy green with subtle blue undertones.
Paint your room with Escape Gray, like this example from The Hady Life, for an effortlessly chic look.
That concludes my roundup of the top gray-green paint colors. I hope you’ll consider giving your home a refreshing facelift with one of these natural hues!
And if any of these shades are ones you’re seriously considering, remember paint-sampling is better than ending up paint-sorry! I highly recommend these peel and stick samples because they are inexpensive, re-usable and re-positionable…
